MAJOR CHESS UPSET IN A NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

16-year-old Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar of Colegio de San Juan de Letran authored three of the biggest upset in a National Chess Championship in year 2013. Baltazar, unrated in the FIDE rating list upset IM Rolando Nolte (2447 FIDE rating) in the 1st round of the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission National Games Blitz Chess Competition held May 27,2013 at the PSC National Athlete Dining Hall. In the 2nd round the biggest upset took place when he defeated GM Darwin Laylo (2500 FIDE rating). And before the year end Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar score another major upset when he won against GM Roland Salvador (2462 FIDE rating) in the 1st round of the National Open Blitz Chess Championships held at the PSC National Athletes Dining Hall, PSC Building RMSC,Manila.

1st Malabon Chess Association Non-Master Chess Tournament: June 7, 2009

11- years old Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar , a grade VI students of F.G.Calderon Integrated School edged out his older rivals via a higher tiebreak scores to rule the 2009 Malabon Rapid Chess Championship held June 7,2009 at the Plaza Hulong Duhat Covered Court,Malabon City,Philippines.Kenneth defeated solo leader Fred Sadongdong in the final round ,thus becoming the youngest winner in the 31 year history of Malabon chess. Philippine College of Criminology incoming freshman Michael Kevin Baltazar, Navotas city champion Emilio Colindres and Fred Sadongdong tied with Kenneth each notching 5.0 points in the 6- rounds Swiss System tournament which drew 36 finalist throughout the city. Category winners: Top lady : Janine Saquing (University of the East) Top Junior ; Aaron Lorenzo (Longos) Top Senior; Giovanni Dy (Hulong Duhat). The tournament was organized by the new Malabon Chess Association in cooperation with Malabon city mayor Tito Oreta and the office of Mrs. Pichay, wife of NCFP president Congressman Pichay.Kagawad (Councilman) Charlie Tan and MCA president Giovanni "Jojo" Dy gave out to the winners the cash awards.
