Good Players are Lucky
Impossible becomes possible. Wesley So of the Philippines takes the individual gold medal in the 2013 Universiade Games in Kazan as lady luck favors So. Before the start of the final round, So was tied for 1-6 place but got a lower tie break score among the leaders and needed a win to bag a medal.
Zaven Andriasian held So to a draw in only 26 moves. Luckily, the other top board also ended in a draw as the six leaders were joined by three other 5.5 pointers who won their last round game. At the end 9 players tied for 1st - 9th place. And the impossible happens 5(five)  of So's early opponents won their final round game .Zhou Jianchao, Robert Hovhanisyan; Jacek  Tomczak; Marian Jurcik and A.Baryshpolets won their games to increased the tie break points of So.  After the second tie break ,three players are still tied all with 47.5 tie break. The 3rd tie  break saw So and Andriasian still tied with 43 points. The fourth tie break using the performance rating So edges Andriasian 2714 - 2704 .As the  Philippines celebrates for its 1st gold medal in the games ,the organizers announce another tie breaker this time the Armageddon tie break with White given 5 minutes against Black 4 minutes . Black will win if the game ended in a draw. After the drawing of lots So got the Black pieces and the rest is history.

12.16 CHESS 

12.16.1 The chess tournaments will be organised in accordance with the most recent 

technical regulations of the Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE). In case 

of disagreement in the interpretation of these rules, the English text will be 

regarded as authoritative. 

12.16.2 The programme and duration of the competitions are fixed by the Executive 

Committee in agreement with the Organising Committee and the CTI-UE. The 

programme of the competitions will last seven (7) days, including one day break, 

and include the following events: 

- one (1) men’s tournament 

- one (1) women’s tournament 

- team classification will be established jointly for men and women 

12.16.3 Each country is authorised to enter a maximum of eight (8) competitors as 

follows: 

- a maximum of five (5) men and three (3) women, or five (5) women and three 

(3) men, or four (4) women and four (4) men 

 Only countries with three (3) competitors or more, of whom at least one (1) men 

and one (1) women, will be taken into account for team classification. 

 At the first General Technical Meeting, the Head of Delegation or his / her 

representative shall confirm and sign the official list of competitors. 

12.16.4 The individual classification will be established according to the total of game 

scored points. In case of a tie, the winner will be determined according to the 

FIDE rules and the chess tournament rules for this championship. 

 Team classification will be determined according to the total of game points 

scored, in the individual tournament, by the three (3) best scored from at least 

one (1) man and one (1) woman from the same country. If the number of men is 

equal or more than 1.5 times the number of women, the team classification will 

be done with the best results of two (2) men and one (1) woman. Similarly, if the 

number of women is equal or more than 1.5 times the number of men, the team 

classification will be done with the best results of two (2) women and one (1) 

man. 

 In the event of a tie, the winning team will be determined according to FIDE rules. 

12.16.5 Countries entering three (3) or more competitors in the chess tournaments 

must bring with their delegation and at their own cost: 

- one (1) international FIDE arbiter 

 These countries must communicate the Organising Committee three (3) months 

before the start of the Summer Universiade, the names of two (2) international 

arbiters (1 effective + 1 non-travelling substitute). 

 Any country failing to fulfil this obligation will pay a penalty fee (Art. 5.3.4) per 

missing arbiter to the Organising Committee
