1995 Shell Active Chess National Capital Region leg
After the successful 11-leg nationwide swing,the shell active chess tournament moved to Metro Manila for its final leg.The tournament held at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Makati from July 8-9 drew 451 participants,surpassing the 448 record set during the Davao outing.The NCR leg also registered the most number of female players. Completing the roster of 26 qualifiers to the national finals are Rogelio Pineda Jr, Russel Velasquez,Paolo del Mundo and Rainier Labay.Eighteen- year old Pineda split his point in the final round with 13- year old del Mundo.Nineteen- year old Velasquez also drew his last match thus creating a three way tie. Pineda of the University of Santo Tomas got the highest quotient in the tie-breaker,earning for himself the Metro Manila leg championship crown, Velasquez of the Wesleyan University of the Philippines and del Mundo of the Ateneo de Manila settled for first and second runner-up places respectively. Labay' a political science major at the Far Eastern University was third runner-up.Special awards were given to Genevieve Bolico and 11-year old Mark Paragua for being the tournament's best female and kiddie player respectively.The award for the school with the most number of participants went to Rizal Technological Colleges. Shell chief executive Reinier Willems led the awarding ceremonies. Philippine Chess Federation National Arbiter Ernie Baltazar officiated the events.
