Docena & Baltazar shared first in 2010 NCR Shell National Active Chess



Jerad Docena and 2010 Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar ended shared first at the NCR leg of the 2010 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship, a nine round Swiss System held June 26-27,2010 at the Event Center,SM Mega Mall,Mandaluyong City.Both scores 8.0 points.This year the event attracted two hundred eighty one players aged 14 years old and below.The first five rounds was held on Saturday,then four rounds on Sunday.
After scoring 5/5 points after five rounds Docena and Baltazar drew each other in round 6. Both players dropped half a point each in the final round.Docena salvage a draw against Paul Robert Evangelista while Baltazar was held to a draw by Giovani Mejia.In the final standings Docena had a slightly better tie break Both qualified for the grand finals to be held in late October this year.
Five players ended shared 3rd,with  7.5 points each but only Giovani Mejia qualified, Christian Nanola (Laguna) Paul Robert Evangelista (FEU) and Jose Carlo Castro also scored 7.5 points but just missed qualifications.Top under 12 players like Mervince Yanzon, Carlo Caranyagan,Elijah Maliam Romulo Curioso Jr and Nelson Busa also failed to qualify.

The 18th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship National Capital Region Leg held recently at SM Megamall finished off with De La Salle University's Mari Joseph Turqueza and Jerad Docena from Far Eastern University- FERN Diliman emerging as leg champions in the Juniors and Kiddies division respectively.

Turqueza (back row, middle) toppled other players in the Juniors division with a score of 7 and 43.5 Bucholz. Sheider Nebato (back row, right) of Far Eastern University posted 7 points and 43 Bucholz to win 1st runner- up, while Adrian Perez (back row, left) of Mapua Institute of Technology garnered 7 points and 39 Bucholz to cop 2nd runner- up. All three earned seats to compete in the grand finals. Richelieu Salcedo of Rizal Technological University fell short as he posted 7 points and 39 Bucholz for the 3rd runner-up spot and Narquingden Reyes of De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde got 7 points and 39 Bucholz which earned him the 4th runner-up trophy.

Docena (front row, middle) finished strong with a perfect score of 8 points and 56 Bucholz. Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar (front row, right) from F.G. Calderon Integrated School won 1st runner- up with 8 points and 54.5 Bucholz, Giovanni Mejia (front row, left) from La Salle Greenhills settled for 2nd runner- up with 7.5 points and 58 Bucholz, while Laguna College of Business and Arts' Christian Nanola placed third with 7.5 points and 55.5 Bucholz. Finally, Paul Robert Evangelista from Far Eastern University- FERN Diliman ranked fourth with 7.5 points and 54.5 Bucholz.

Each winner from the respective divisions received a cash prize, while the six finalists, also took home trophies aside from cash prizes which were handed over by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Social Performance Head for Pandacan Janot Barretto (far left) and Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre (far right).
