Steinitz, Fathers of modern chess.

Born in Prague in 1836 to a poor Jewish family,he learned the game at 12 and developed in Vienna while attending the Polytechnic School there where he studied mathematics until chess overcame him.By 1862 he made his debut at the London International Tournament  where he finished sixth.He then remained in London,which was at the time the chess center of the world,and eked out a living as a chess proffessional. In 1886 he surprisingly defeated Anderssen in a match by 8-6 and followed that by a series of strong tournament showings capped by two fine first places at London in 1872 and Vienna in  1873.But from then until 1882 he almost completely abandoned over-the-board play for concentrated study of the game's foundations and expostulations thereupon in his chess column in "The Field". Steinitz gave credit  to Louis Paulsen for many of Paulsen's ideas he used,but he elaborated on Paulsen's work and developed an entire theory of positional play.It was not only that Steinitz possesed a very high ability to synthesize and generalize,but also that he had a marvelous command of the English language in which he set forth his ideas.
Steinitz as a person was very argumentative,and this characteristic led him into many bitter verbal battles in the pages of his chess columna and later in his "Intenational Chess Magazine".(1885-1891) which he founded when he emigrated o the United States.Many of his long-winded attacks and rebuttals of his critics make interesting reading,for Steinitz had a very real way with words.

2010 Palarong Maynila chess Competition: DCS retains title

Manila's Division of City Schools won 3 gold and 3 silver medals to emerged over-all champion in the 2010 Palarong MAYNILA Chess Competition held November 22-26,2010 at the Manila Science High School.
The Elementary girls team of Ares Ocampos and Michelle Elizalde finished first in the Individual and the Team Events.The DCS 3rd gold comes from the Elementary Boys team of Robin Ignacio and David Luchina. In the High School Girls Division, it's another 1-2 finished for the pair of 2010 Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Mikee Suede and FM Cherry Ann Mejia of Letran College.

Chess Pairings Protest at the 2010 Asian Games!

The National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan and Iran raised an official protest at the start of the 7th round of the 2010 Asian Games Women Team Competition . In the 7th and last round top ranked and leader China 11 match points was paired against Jordan who is at the bottom with  zero match points.The official protest, saying that a mismatch might easily awards more points to the higher ranked team. Pairings are done by the computer.------and the results  Jordan   0   -   China   4.

Chess, a spectators sports!?

Four years ago at the last Asian games in Doha,Qatar, just one person paid to watch the chess tournament.... a coach who had forgotten his accreditation to get into the venue.
Chess in which competitor never get out of their seats belonging an international athletic competition?

The spectators sat in front of an electronic representationof the match projected on a screen.....spectators don't actually get to see the "athletes".

Chess out of 2014 ASIAN GAMES!!

Chess will not become a part of the 2014 Incheon Games in South Korea.It was decided that the number of sports be trimmed to 35 by contesting the 28 Olympic sports and an additional 7 non-Olympic sports. The Korean organizers proposed the seven non-olympic sports as  baseball,tenpin-bowling,kabbadi,sepak takraw,softball,squash and wushu for inclusions. The IOC bats for the inclusions of cricket and karate . South Korean participated in the chess events at Guangzhou fielding 3 players whose age are 12 years old and below in the womens division.
