The lower rated team Philippines relied on their aging players to upset the super-GM's of India in the semi-finals of the 2010 Asian Games Chess competition at the Guangzhou Institute of Chess,China. Eugene Torre(2484),58-years old , defeated GN Gopal (2609) on Board 4 while the 48-years old Rogelio Antonio(2573) stunned GM Krishnan Sasikiran(2688) on Board 2.Bu t it was the 22 years old John Paul Gomez (2522)who provided the victory when he held Indian super Gm Surya Shekar Ganguly into a draw.Indian Chess Superstar GM P Harikrishna (2657) beat Philippines top player Wesley So on Board 1 for India's only victory in four games.
Philippines will now face the powerhouse team of China in the gold medal match. The Chinese national team finished 5 th in the last Chess Olympiad in Khanti-Mansysk,Russiawhere the Philippines finished a disappointing 50th place.
