The game between the top two seeded players, Francisco Pons Vallejo against Nigel Short ended in a short draw,lasting only 9 moves of a French Defense to share the lead with two others with 4.5 points after 5 rounds of the 2011 Thailand Open Chess Championship held in Dusit Thani Resort and Spa,Pattaya,Thailand from April 11-17,2011.
GM Win Lay Zaw of Myanmar and Abhijit Kunte of India won against their respective opponents to join the leader. Zaw defeated local Jirapak Pitirojirathon in a marathon games lasting 49 moves of a Slav Defense while Kunte won against WGM Alina L' Ami in 48 moves of a King's Indian Defense. Third seed Jan Gustafsson of Germany was slow down by two draws against Fm Max Illingwoth of Australia and IM Atanu Lahiri of India and shares 5th - 13th place with 4.0 points. Nelson "Elo" Mariano III ,Philippines lone entry, score upset victories against 15th seed IM Roy Saptarshi of India in the 4th round and 16th seed IM Thomas Willemze of Netherlands in the 2nd round. Mariano now shares 15th -33rd place with 3.5 points on 3 wins 1 draw and a loss to GM Win Lay Zaw. The tournament that attracted a total of 141 players from 32 countries including 10 GM's ; 2 WG's and 14 IM's is a straight 9 round Swiss System.
